Jeanette Day

Jeanette Day
Co-Founder, Just in Time for Foster Youth
Former Child Advocacy Attorney

Just In Time honors Jeanette Day for over 30 years of service to the disadvantaged and disenfranchised, as well as her critical role in the birth of our organization by naming her to the Honorary Board.

Jeanette served as a Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA), then as a children's social worker, and finally as a child advocacy attorney in the San Diego Juvenile Courts. Her close working relationship with foster youth enabled her to see that a majority of these youth were leaving foster care without family support, which is a crucial component of the transition to adulthood and self -sufficiency. Jeanette recruited friends to start an auxiliary that would give foster youth a better chance of succeeding by providing basic needs and essential resources. For the first two years, Jeanette devoted most of her non-professional hours to networking with foster youth agencies and to developing the My First Home program.

But perhaps Jeanette's proudest accomplishment is her mother-daughter relationship with a foster youth who was one of JIT's first recipients and is now a successful businesswoman, as well as a member of the JIT Board of Directors.

Kathryn Vaughn

Kathryn Vaughn, Esq
Co-Founder, Just in Time for Foster Youth
Partner, Law Offices of Vaughn and Vaughn

Just In Time for Foster youth recognizes Kathryn Vaughn's contribution to the "heart" of JIT by naming her an Honorary Board member.

Kathryn led Just In Time as President and volunteer Executive Director from 2004 until 2010. From the beginning, Kathryn had a vision to transform the volunteer auxiliary into an established organization. That vision was realized when she guided Just In Time to become a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, effective July 2006. Under her extraordinary leadership, JIT partnered with foster youth agencies, developed and expanded programs, sought out grants and donations, and forged critical alliances with business, donors and community leaders to assist hundreds of youth each year. During Kathryn's stewardship, Just In Time distributed nearly one million dollars in benefits to thousands of underserved former foster youth. In 2010, Kathryn received the Governor and First Lady's Medal of Services award as California's Volunteer of the Year.

Kathryn set the standard for helping from the heart. She opened her home for the first "College Bound" event, mentored numerous youth, celebrated their birthdays, and was always a phone call away to support them during the challenges of transition to independence.

Tony Hsu

Tony Hsu
Co-Founder, Just in Time for Foster Youth
Founder/CIO, Alethea Capital Management

Just in Time for Foster Youth has designated longtime supporter Tony Hsu as the very first Honorary Board member, a title bestowed upon a select few individuals whose legacy of contribution has been essential to JIT’s success.

As Treasurer of JIT for four years, Tony was instrumental in obtaining the 501-c-3 non-profit designation for Just in Time and creating a financial foundation for the newly independent nonprofit. He has been tireless in his efforts to make the community aware of the plight of transitioning foster youth. Tony created an inspirational financial fitness presentation, including his famous $5 Challenge, and has personally mentored many youth. With his expertise in finance, he showed youth how to live within a budget, pay off credit cards, and build savings. But on the weekends he would often be seen carrying furniture into a youth's first apartment and providing emergency assistance, knowing from experience that such assistance can be the turning point in the life of a young adult.
