Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) provides transitioning foster youth with opportunities for self-sufficiency through emergency support, essential resources, and caring personal guidance at critical junctures on their path to independence.
We may envision these transitioning youth, now emancipated from the foster care system as boundless, liberated, limitless and free; the reality facing San Diego’s foster care alumni, however, is anything but. Their reality is fraught with limitation, encumbrances, scarcity and a freedom akin to being dropped from the highest mountain without wings.
Committed to transforming that reality, JIT is currently the only volunteer-driven non-profit organization in San Diego that functions as an extended family for foster youth who have aged out of the foster care system, providing much needed gap services to support them in their educational pursuits, vocational training, furnishing of first homes, and financial stability.
The key to JIT’s success has been the mobilization of community volunteers, called the JIT Champions, who act as extended family by developing personal relationships with the youth and insuring that the JIT programs and services have a long-lasting impact.
Our goal is to ensure that San Diego’s emancipated youth attain and sustain self-sufficiency levels significantly higher than the national average for this group. The whole of our program is intended to significantly improve their chances of: securing steady employment with decent pay and benefits; establishing and sustaining stable housing; responsibly managing their finances for the long term; forming families that they can support; steering clear of the criminal justice system; and making meaningful contributions throughout the San Diego community.
