Keep in Touch/Long-term Sponsorship

Provides a board member or volunteer to work one-on-one with a Just in Time youth to identify his/her needs, give life guidance, and connect the youth with all of Just in Time's program resources. This assistance can be maintained throughout a four to five year period.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:

Sade
When times are tough and I hit a rough part of the road, and the world seems so bad, I know that my mentor will be there for me. She always takes my calls. Just In Time helped give me the things I needed to start my life when I was eighteen, but they also loved me like a family. That means everything to me.

LaTroy
The knowledge that there are people, who are not your family, that are willing to help you with no strings attached is amazing to me. It gave me hope, which is very important to me.

Abdi
The assistance and direction I received from Just In Time has been more than I could ever explain. I truly believe that without the help of Just In Time I would not be where I am today, a full- time student at SDSU and an employee for the County of San Diego.

HOW IT WORKS:

JIT YOUTH contract to “keep in touch” as part of their commitment when they receive My First Home setups or awards through College Bound or Spring into Success. They may choose their JIT volunteer or be paired with volunteers upon receipt of JIT services. Youth choose the level of communication they desire, e-mail, phone, or face-to-face on a frequent or infrequent basis. Click here for the YOUTH KIT FORM.

KIT VOLUNTEERS are JIT supporters who have previous experience with JIT through volunteering or contributing in other ways. We have only a few important requirements:

  • Commit to being a KIT volunteer for one year.
  • Attend 2 meetings a year.
  • Complete a JIT feedback form in a timely manner.
  • Provide the minimum communication level (one communication per month for 10 months via e-mail, phone, or in-person in agreement with your youth.)
  • Respond in a timely manner to communication from your youth.
  • Meet your youth in public places.
  • Keep your conversations confidential unless there is an emergency.
  • Listen carefully to understand how best you can assist your youth.

To qualify as a KIT volunteer, you must:

  • Have had one previous experience with JIT as a donor or volunteer
  • Provide a JIT reference (staff, board member, donor, or volunteer who knows you)
  • Submit a KIT VOLUNTEER FORM.

If you have questions or need more information, please e-mail KIT coordinator, Lorri Hilbert, or phone: 858-748-4253.
