My First Home For The Holidays
Each year, around 125 youth participants, honorees, volunteers, staff, investors and board members come together for an annual holiday gathering at Mission Hills United Church of Christ. Volunteers from the church give the space a festive makeover with wreaths and large white candles on every table, and help set up a special holiday boutique where youth receive holiday gifts for themselves or to give to their friends and family this holiday season. The aroma of the holidays from co-sponsors, Bekkers Catering, who cater lunch with baked ham, creamy mashed potatoes with a turkey gravy, baked mac n’ cheese and a delicious green bean amandine. To top it off, there is an assortment of desserts to compliments the hot cocoa station.
Customary to My First Home For The Holidays are three youth awards for being “Connected,” “Confident,” and “Capable,” Each awardee shares compelling and heartfelt stories about their lives and speaks about how the journey to becoming confident, connected and capable was made possible by the support of the JIT community. Awardees, who are nominated by the JIT volunteer community, get to collaborate on their acceptance speeches with longtime JIT volunteer and author of Business Storytelling For Dummies, Karen Dietz! Each powerful story is brimming with emotion, personal pride, and inspires the entire room!
